Topana district

Do you want to get to know one of the most historic districts of the Old Town in Chania?

Leaving the Firka fortress, the entire neighborhood (up to the junction of Zambeliou and Douka streets) is known as Topanas and is famous for its 17th and 18th century Venetian architecture and Turkish baths.

The name of the district comes from the Venetian Gunpowder Warehouse (in Turkish Tophane) which means bombs for the cannons.

Essentially, the Topana district was the Greek district of Chania during the Ottoman period (the Turks settled in the prosperous Splantzia and Kasteli districts).

Stroll down Angelou Street and the cobbled streets around it, where you’ll find nice souvenir shops and small tavernas.

Meanwhile, the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection of Chania is housed in a building that was a 15th-century Venetian monastery known as San Salvatore before it was converted into a mosque and finally reused as a museum in 1997.
