Komolithi at Potamida

In Western Crete, Komolithi is one of the most unusual and stunning geological formations that may be found.

Some describe them as the Meteora of Crete, some believe they are on a lunar landscape, some believe it is the Arizona of Crete, and still others believe they were unexpectedly in Cappadocia.

The Komolithi rock formations in the picturesque village of Potamida stand out with their unique origin and history.
These formations originated millions of years ago as part of the seabed, as evidenced by the marine fossils discovered on their surfaces. Researchers from the Netherlands have determined their age to be approximately 7.2 million years.
Over time, the forces of rain and wind have gradually shaped these remnants of the ancient sea, giving rise to the extraordinary geological spectacle that exists today.

Just beyond the village homes lies this unique geological formation on a rich plain. The Komolithos rock formations are distinguished by their bare sides and shrubby summits, towering over the surrounding fields.

The clay-like composition of Komolithos has historically been used by locals to seal rooftops and construct cooking stoves.
