Leather Street – “Stivanadika”

A visit to Stivanadika, a street evocative of an Eastern bazaar, is highly recommended.

Although it goes by Skridlof on the map, it has adopted the name Stivanadika from the Cretan boots called “stivania”. Stivania are tall boots that are stiff, very durable, and typically black, sometimes also white.

In Crete they are worn especially in rural areas together with the pants called “kilota”. The stivania are also worn with the traditional “pants” of the Cretan costume called “vraka”.

Thus, “Leather Street,” “Skridlof,” “Stivanadika,” and other similar names refer to the street where shoemakers produced the customary handmade “stivania” in the early 20th century.

However, the conventional shoe stores of today have evolved into boutiques that provide jewelry, souvenirs, and leather products.
Even though the costs aren’t the lowest, you may still buy high-quality leather shoes, wallets, belts, and bags.

The color and vibe of the bazaar make it worthwhile to come even if you have no intention of purchasing anything.
