The Archaeological Museum of Chania
The Archaeological Museum of Chania is nestled in the charming neighborhood of Halepa.
Τhe Archaeological Museum of Chania boasts a remarkable collection of artifacts from the Minoan and Roman civilizations. Over 3,500 ancient objects, ranging from exquisite coins and jewelry to delicate vases and sculptures, are on display here.
These treasured pieces have been unearthed from excavations throughout the city of Chania and the surrounding areas, including the ancient cities of Kydonia, Aptera, Polyrrinia, Kissamos, Elyros, Yrtakina, Syia (known today as Sougia), and Lissos.
The ancient city of Lissos was adorned with a multitude of votive objects, showcasing the city’s opulence and power. Among all the cities in Crete, only Gortyna rivaled Lissos in the number of intricately crafted statues. This is a testament to the incredible wealth and influence of the Asclepieion of Lissos.
Today, the Archaeological Museum of Chania proudly exhibits the statue of Asclepius along with twenty other remarkable sculptures from the city.
Additionally, on the ground floor, there are two tables specially designed for the blind or visually impaired visitors. These tables feature tactile displays of items from the prehistoric and historical collections, allowing visitors to touch and feel the objects while also reading about them through Braille inscriptions.
