The Catholic Church of Chania city

The headquarters of the Catholic Diocese of Crete can be found in the beautiful city of Chania.

One of the notable landmarks in this city is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Catholic Church.
As we explore the streets of Chania, starting at the bustling Plateia 1866 and making our way down Halidon Street, we will encounter a number of impressive sites on our right.

There is the impressive Trimartyri Square which takes its name from the Orthodox Cathedral and Metropolitan Church of Chania which bears the same name. In addition to these remarkable attractions, there is also a hidden gem waiting to be discovered on our left.

As we make our way towards No. 46 on the street, we will come across a small door adorned with the emblem of the Franciscan Capuchins.
This unassuming entrance, opposite Trimartyri Square, leads to a world of spiritual depth and cultural significance.

Upon entering the building’s entryway, we are greeted a charming inner courtyard nestled beneath the grand presence of a neoclassical church.

This majestic Catholic church, built in 1879, boasts a three-aisled basilica design, adorned with a blend of Renaissance and Neoclassical architecture. Adjacent to the church stands the historic Franciscan Capuchin monastery, which has stood firm since its construction in 1991.
