Sougia Beach

Situated 65 kilometers from the city of Chania, Sougia is a small seaside village in the prefecture of Chania on the South Coast of Western Crete.

There is more than one response to questions like “What is the most beautiful part of Crete?” and “What should I not miss in Crete?”
However, Sougia, on Crete’s south-west coast, is unquestionably one of the greatest locations.

Sougia is the best place to go if you wish to swim in the crystal-clear, blue waters of the Libyan Sea, sunbathe in the warm Southern Cretan sun, enjoy a laid-back holiday without worry, and hike on stunning paths.

To go to Sougia from Chania you will travel via the route to Alikianos. Even though the road is winding and tight, the breathtaking route makes up for it.

The road passes through the plain with the orange groves of Alikianos, climbs up to the mountains, and passes through the village of Agia Irini, from which the green gorge of the same name begins, almost reaching Sougia.

From there, the road descends to Sougia and the south coast of the Prefecture of Chania through charming villages and slopes covered in olive trees, oaks, and chestnuts.

A boat from Sfakia or Agia Roumeli (the point where the Samaria Gorge finishes) can also take you to Sougia.

The beach is quite long—a little over a kilometer—and even on public holidays, it will appear deserted to you.

In front of cafes and restaurants, the beach is set up with loungers and umbrellas in the center for your pleasure.
You can traverse the magnificent Agia Irini Gorge and combine your journey to Sougia with a visit to Ancient Lissos.
